The inaugural Cancer Awakens Sherpa Training and Certification Program was held at Kautilya Leadership Centre from 3rd to 12th November 2017. 13 SHERPAs took a leap towards offering a pioneering cancer-care coaching service.

The need and importance of non-medical care

“Why me?”, is the first thing that comes to your mind when you’re diagnosed with cancer. The cancer journey is mentally and emotionally draining not just for the patient but also the family. You’re thrown into the world of hospitals, medications, surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Mainstream treatment largely focuses on the clinical aspect of the tumour and the organ. The healing of the person is often ignored. The lack of well-curated information doesn’t help the cause.

At this challenging time, patients and families need access to someone who’s ‘been there, done that’ and who can hand hold them through the journey. The Cancer Awakens Sherpa Training & Certification Program is designed to fill a critical gap in the cancer ecosystem. Your SHERPAs will help you reframe cancer as a growth opportunity rather than a death sentence.

Instead of saying, “Why me?” what if you can say, “Try me?”

Careful selection

13 people were carefully chosen to become ‘beacons of light and hope’ in their families and communities. They came from Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad, Singapore and the US (Miami). Each one is either a Thriver, a Caregiver or a Practitioner who has witnessed cancer close-up. Now as individual SHERPAs, each will help others make meaning of the cancer journey. Collectively, they form a strong and cohesive support system.

Immersive process

The 10-day experiential workshop was a mix of a series of talks, interactive sessions, individual and group activities and initiations. At the core was Cancer Awakens Holistic and Integrated approach to cancer as outlined in the book ‘My Cancer is Me: The journey from Illness to Wholeness’. The stimulating sessions resulted in rich discussions and powerful insights. The fellowship only got stronger by the day. The accomplished and highly engaged group bonded well together and helped each other learn from their experience. When ‘Purpose’ is shared and ‘Passion’ multiplied, what more can one ask for?

Outstanding venue

The cherry on the cake was the Kautilya Leadership Centre, who hosted our program. The great facilities, lovely weather, quality service and lovingly prepared food just enhanced the learning and the bonding. Our spirit guide, the crab regularly showed up!
